Are We the First Generation That Won’t Live as Long as Our Parents?
Not just WHY, but how not to be a statistic.
For most of modern history, life expectancy only went up as medicine, technology, and living conditions improved. But in the last 60 years, something changed.
The U.S. is one of the only wealthy nations where life expectancy is going down.
We should be living longer, stronger, and healthier than the generations before us. Instead, we’re sicker, more medicated, and dying younger.
This isn’t by accident—it’s by design.
with all that we have seen and experienced from heightened levels of stress and anxiety due to how common mass shootings became, declining self care due to burn out and hustle culture, I believe that my generation has the power to reclaim our health and not become a statistic. first we have to learn better so that we can do better as a collective.
Let’s break down what happened, why it’s killing us, and how we can take our health back.
1️⃣ The Processed Food Takeover (1970s - Now)
In the 1970s, fast food and processed meals became a staple in American households.
High-fructose corn syrup, seed oils, artificial flavors, and preservatives replaced real food.
Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer rates skyrocketed because we weren’t eating nutrients—we were eating chemicals.
In 1960, obesity was 13%. Today? 42% of Americans are obese and over 70% are overweight.
SOLUTION: Whole, fresh, nutrient-dense foods—no factory-made garbage.Shop at places like ADLI’S, delete uber eats/ DoorDash, plan or prep your meals for the week, shop the weekly sales.
Take the extra step to evaluate their relationship with food. So many of us eat to feel good, as a treat or celebration Instead of a way for us to fuel our bodies as it was intended.
2️⃣ The Rise of Chronic Stress & Burnout (1980s - Now)
Our parents’ generation had stable jobs, pensions, and homes that didn’t cost a lifetime of debt.
In 1980, the federal minimum wage was $3.10 ($11.85 in today’s dollars). In 2024, it’s only $7.25—meaning it has actually lost value over time due to inflation.
Our generation is the first to work more and afford less than our parents. The economy isn’t broken—it was designed to keep us in a cycle of Chronic stress which leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and autoimmune issues.
Hustle Culture is killing us.
🛠️ SOLUTION: Rest is a form of resistance. Setting boundaries, getting quality sleep, and prioritizing peace over grind culture is key to longevity.
3️⃣ The Overmedication Epidemic (1990s - Now) 💊💉
The 1990s introduced the rise of Big Pharma. Big Pharma is all about profit, do you really expect the industry that makes money from you being sick is going to do everything in its power to make you not sick………
Instead of preventing disease, we became a nation that just pops pills. Dr.’s were encouraged to overprescribe opioids, many times even received financial incentives. leading to mass addiction, overdoses, and a full-blown crisis. Instead of treating pain holistically, millions became dependent on pills.
Antidepressants, painkillers, ADHD meds, and weight loss drugs are handed out like candy.
We have more medical advancements than ever—but we’re sicker than ever. The medicine they’re handing out objectively isn’t making you any better it is just making you feel better in the moment.
🛠️ SOLUTION: The goal isn’t just “avoiding pills”—it’s learning how to support your body naturally so you don’t become dependent on the system.
Educate yourself on the medication you are currently taking and incorporate holistic remedies. for example, when people get diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 9/10 the Dr. is going to prescribe metformin. which has been linked to liver and kidney failure after longterm use and Vitamin B12 Deficiency which leads to Nerve Damage & Cognitive Decline. Some natural ways to maintain the blood sugar would be intermittent fasting, Berberine is called natures metformin, even being more active will help maintain blood sugar levels naturally.
4️⃣ The Tobacco to Vape Pipeline (2000s - Now) 🚬➡️💨
in the early 2000’s around 22-28% of U.S. adults and nearly 23% of high school students smoking regularly.
Despite decades of anti-smoking campaigns, Big Tobacco’s aggressive marketing—especially targeting Black communities with menthol cigarettes—kept addiction rates high.
By 2005, adult smoking rates had dropped to 20.9%, and by 2011, youth smoking rates fell below 15% for the first time. This decline was a direct result of education efforts, higher cigarette taxes, and smoking bans!
Our generation was supposed to be the first to escape the tobacco industry. At my high school kids were smoking joints not cigarettes. tobacco wasn’t even on our radar!
Then they hit us with vapes, Juuls, and flavored nicotine products. By 2018, 3.6 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes, a 78% increase from the year before.
I too fell victim to vapes at the big age of 23! I was studying for a huge license so I was under a lot of stress without a good coping mechanism. it was just a lil something to take the edge off. it was cute until I started getting nicotine headaches, No appetite, nausea, and slowly noticed changes in my breathing.
lets not forget how ADDICTING vapes are. when I found myself rearranging my room to look for my vape it was time to wrap it up !
🛠️ SOLUTION: If we don’t actively educate the addiction will continue to trickle down into the next generation. we have no clue how these E-cigarettes will impact our bodies long term. we need to kick the addiction and inform the masses.
5️⃣ The Collapse of Community & Human Connection (2010s - Now) 🤳🏾📉
Loneliness is now considered a public health crisis.
We went from real-life connections to digital-only relationships.
Studies show that social isolation increases early death risk by 29%.
We’re replacing community & support with endless scrolling and parasocial relationships.
🛠️ SOLUTION: Health isn’t just food & fitness—it’s who you surround yourself with. We have to build real, in-person communities again. social media is a great asset but will never triumph in person connection. freedom lies in community but before integrating o
How to Start Taking Your Health Back NOW 🏆
1️⃣ EAT REAL FOOD 🥦
80% of your diet should be real, whole foods.
If you are eating out 5x a week, make the conscious effort to eat out only 3x next week.
Celebrate the small wins.

Journal!

Final Thoughts: It’s Time to Break the Cycle
If we don’t change course, our generation will be weaker, sicker, and more dependent than any before us.
But if we start reclaiming our health NOW—we can reverse the trend.
We don’t have to accept shorter lives, weaker bodies, and declining health. We have the power to change this.
